How to Make Festive Christmas Bows on a Budget - Simple DIY

Writer's picture: JeannyJeanny

It's that time of year again. Aside from enjoying my hot cup of coffee or hot chocolate by the fireplace, I like to do Christmas crafts like homemade wreath from fresh pine boughs, or these hanging Christmas bows I'm about to teach you how to do. These boughs are cheap to make and are so easy to do. Follow along below for materials needed and step-by-step instructions.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

  • Wired burlap Christmas ribbon (I used 2.5" wide rolls)

  • Thin jute twines (3" and 6" long)

  • A pair of sharp scissors

  • Glue gun and glue sticks

  • Christmas balls ornaments

  • A ruler

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS (with Pictures)

Step 1: Cut three 8" segments from the roll of wired burlap ribbon.

Here, I used a ruler to measure the 3 segments I needed.

Step 2: Stack and align all 3 of the 8" segments of ribbon together.

Stack and align the 3 pieces the best that you can. Using the scissors, cut a triangle off one side of the stacked ribbons as shown below:

Step 3: Cut a triangle off the other side of the stacked 8" segments of ribbon.

Essentially, do the same thing you just did in step 2.

Step 4: Unstack. One segment at a time, fold it in half and cut the wire on each side.

Folding in half ensures that you cut the wire at the midway point. Repeat step 4 with the remaining 2 segments.

Step 5: One at a time, pinch the middle and tightly wrap the middle with a 3" jute twine.

I start pinching from one end, then work my way to the other end. Wrap and tie tightly. Repeat step 5 with the remaining 2 segments.

Step 6: Stack & tightly wrap all 3 segments together.

Make sure the 6 sides are equally spread out like a 6-sided star. Then, wrap & tie tightly with a 6" jute twine. Cut extra strings.

Step 7: Detach the cap off the Christmas ball.

Some caps are easier to remove than others. You can use a pair of pliers if the cap doesn't come right off.

Step 8: Glue and attach Christmas ball.

Using the hot glue from the glue gun, attach the Christmas ball at the front center of the 6-sided "star" or unfinished bow. Wait until cool, about 30 seconds.

Step 9: Use a 6" jute twine to tie onto the bow for hanging as pictured below:
